Auch is the largest town in the Gers and the Departmental
Capital.
By car, the old centre, which is dominated by the Cathedral,
can be reached in around 40 mins from Condom and Le Lavandou. There is a
commercial zone to the North of the town and the 'Rocade' (by-pass) which is
around 30 minutes from Le Lavandou. The zone includes a massive Leclerc,
which is good for bulk food shopping, and a number of other stores.
This walk around the town centre takes around 90 mins,
starting at the Office de Tourism, which is beneath one of the oldest
buildings in Auch - in the Place de Republique, between the Cathedral and the
Place de la Liberation - which has a a large fountain in the middle (marked
6 on the map below).
A detailed guide for the walk is available from the Office de
Tourism - which is closed at lunchtime. A good walk for the morning, with
lunch at one of the restaurants in rue Lamartine, which starts next to the
Office de Tourism (marked 1 on the map).
There is a large shaded and unrestricted parking area immediately
north of the Place de la Liberation, between the Place and the town's
museum.
